Poetry 8 x 8

Free eight-week poetry critique group meeting Saturdays from September 22nd – November 10th, 2012 at Aquarius Books & Gifts on E Street in Grants Pass, Oregon

“I participated in four or five of these 8 people / 8-week community courses and the benefits to my poetry and my other creative writing were just boundless. I now carry the combined critical voices of everyone I ever workshopped with in my head.  My poetry’s so much better for it, and the fun I had every hour of every class defies measurement. It was always the best part of my week!” ~ Juliet Meredith

This free eight-week poetry critique group is for up to eight participants.  Poets of all skill and experience levels warmly welcomed.  Keep reading for more information about group member expectations and commitments.

We will meet every Saturday, September 22nd through November 10th, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Aquarius Books and Gifts on E Street in Grants Pass.  Each week, we will workshop up to two poems (no more than five pages) per person.  All styles and genres of poetry may be presented for workshop, and group members will be expected to provide feedback for every poem submitted by their fellow group members the previous week (that’s up to 14 poems per week).  This is a serious time commitment.

Each group member will provide poetry critique to fellow poets.  Ideally, participants will have experience in a structured critique setting such as another writing critique group or a community or university class where critiquing fellow students’ work was part of the course.  However, as long as you are willing to provide critique, no particular experience is necessary.  As some poetry may contain mature and adult themes, this group is open to poets 18 and older, and anyone applying should be comfortable workshopping poetry of all styles, genres and themes.

Of course the occasional absence from the group is expected (We all have lives!), but since this intensive workshop runs for only eight weeks, group members will be expected to attend the large majority of meetings.  By signing up, you agree to have no more than two missed weeks out of the eight scheduled.

There will be a one-hour orientation meeting on Saturday, September 8th at 10 a.m. at Aquarius Books and Gifts.  Attendance at orientation is mandatory so that procedures and expectations for the group can be fully understood.

Sign up below.  Group membership to qualified poets will be granted on a first come / first served basis with a waiting list for additional interested poets.
